Hi, my name is Alyssa Boyle and I am a Cavewoman. But this wasn't always the case. I grew up in the tiny town of Cathey's Valley, CA (population 362), just outside of Mariposa, gateway to Yosemite. I was known for three things: my pet rooster, Penrod; my love of the dramatic arts; and my prize-winning lemon bars. Upon graduation from high school, I packed my bags and moved down to Southern California with the goal of becoming a famous actress. After graduation from U.C. Irvine, I moved to Hollywood.
I pounded the pavement in Tinsel Town for years, appearing primarily in theatre productions, commercials, and the occasional gig on a soap opera. I was also a hand and foot model for print and television advertising. The whole time, however, my love of cooking was never far behind. I was featured cooking in many commercials and once ambitiously made 300 gingerbread men for a large Beverly Hills hotel’s corporate gift baskets.
The popularity of the Food Network got my creative juices flowing and I changed course with the goal of creating my own cooking show. I and and my show, The Unidentified Food Objects Show, were chosen out of 10,000 applicants as a semi-finalist for the very first season of the Food Network’s hit series The Next Food Network Star. Although I didn’t get my own show through that effort I and my annual Jolly Gingerbread Holiday Party were featured in the Food Network Holiday Magazine. All the while, I continued experimenting in my kitchen, creating unique and exciting recipes. A year later, I would become the Cavewoman.
Although I had always loved desserts and was famous for making cookies and bars, I had adopted a healthier lifestyle over the years and was determined to cut back on the amount of sugar and processed foods I allowed into my body. One day I was eating an organic energy bar and, while enjoying it, I wished I was eating one of my homemade desserts. Vowing to stay junk-food-free, I decided then and there to create a bar that tasted like a decadent treat, but without the sugar, flour, milk and eggs. Two days later, the first Cavewoman Bar was being taste-tested by my friends. Two weeks later, the name Cavewoman Bars® was adopted. I chose Cavewoman Bars® because my bars are made with only Fruit, Nuts, and Spices, like our ancient cave-dwelling ancestors used to gather. (And the name makes people laugh and laughter is the best medicine!)
Over the next couple of years I worked day and night on Cavewoman Bars®, learning the business and experimenting with flavors. In the beginning, I produced my bars out of my kitchen with homemade labels for a handful of loyal customers. Along the way I became a Vegan and more committed to health and fitness and animal rights. I strongly believe in the quote by Hippocrates, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” That being said, my philosophy is that seriously healthy food doesn’t have to be serious. My bars are now being offered in 5 fun (and familiar) flavors: “PB&J,” “Pineapple Upside-Down Cake,” “Banana Nut Bread,” “Baklava” and “Blueberry Pancake.” As each Cavewoman Bars® package proudly states, its contents are “So tasty you’ll forget it’s good for ya!”
Cavewoman Bars® are Vegan, Soy-Free, Gluten-Free and Refined Sugar-Free. They contain only the finest raw Fruit, Nuts and Spices – That’s it! In 2009 I contracted with a manufacturer to make my bars in larger quantities (but still by hand) and started selling Cavewoman Bars® to the general public. They are currently sold on online and by select stores and fitness centers in Southern California. Please click here for more information.
